Speech and freedom of it.
August 28, 2005, 10:53AM

by: Salome

Ok, here we go.
Yesterday I "went to bat" for the bitch posse. Some may wonder, why? it is most simple really.
See, when you look at the front of DS, you see how it welcomes all. In fact, encourages all to come and express themselves. The bitch posse do just that. In a, all be it, very strong, sometimes acidic, sarcastic way. But never the less, they come to express themselves.
As I came back to regularly participating in DS. I noted how it suddenly became wrong or questionable to be "passionate" about a view. Yet some that are termed "faux emo" have a free reign to complain and bemoan how strongly others are expressing themselves. Well, they were doing the exact same thing. They were doing the very thing that they were bashing the "posse" for.
Personally,(and I state this not as a site op but as ME)That was not only unfair but it was practicing the very thing they were trying to stop. the singling out of a group or individual based on belief or expression. The very group saying that the posse was doing that...were doing it themselves.
Now, here is where it gets tricky.
We all here, generally feel very strongly about things. One way or the other.
If we are to really work at being a place where all the alt folks can come, be welcome and express themselves. We all need to realize that there are going to be clashes in the groups.
But just as one side wishes to the right to express themselves, we then have to accept -all- sides are going to have that right. Even the sides we will hate or be wholly against.
There are people on here I would love nothing better then to suspend their accounts just because what they preach or do is so against everything I believe in. But, I don’t. why? because despite I hate what they say or do, they have the right to express it. (keep in mind with in reason. if someone is harassing or threatening etc or causing trouble yes the TOS takes effect. If someone is just talking about what they believe in with out threatening or harassing, then they have that right)
The bitch posse are passionate and express themselves strongly. If they do go over the line, I am one of the firsts to ask for a chill out.
As all you would love the expression and freedom to do so...so do they and have the same right you do.
We may not agree, we may not like it, we may even be against it. BUT, you must remember. In a world where we can enjoy free speech. there will be free speech that will sting or even anger us. To truly be welcoming of all "groups" we have to accept and even learn from those we do not agree with.

A small feature and a security change.
August 14, 2005, 6:24PM

by: eon

One small feature has been added to the site that I believe our forum goers will appreciate. You may now go into your Control Panel and find a menu there called 'Forum Settings'. For now, there are only two settings but they've been asked for quite a bit:

Topic Rows: Sets the number of topic rows that are displayed as you browse the forums. You may set this to any number between 10 and 100.

Post Rows: Sets the number of posts that are displayed as you browse a topic. You may set this to any number between 10 and 50.

The defaults for these have been changed as well. Previously we were all stuck with 20 topic rows and 10 post rows. This made browsing through lots of posts a little difficult. This default has been changed to 50 rows for topics and 20 rows for posts (so if you like these new defaults, you don't even need to bother with changing the new settings).

A small change was also made to profile security. Now, when you block someone from your profile, they will not be able to view or comment on your blog.

Thanks, hope you find these updates helpful.

the afterlife?
July 30, 2005, 5:32AM

by: myinsanity

All my life I've watched everyone around me either try and convert the people they know into the religion they follow, or watched them search for thier 'perfect religion'. I have to say.. I find both of these things a waste of time. Now, I don't have any specific religion, I just take beliefs and aspects from many religions that already exist, this way, I can create an ideal system of morals and beliefs that will make me not only feel better about myself but promote me to feel better about everyone around me. I feel choosing one specific religion is just a way of constricting the variety of beliefs you could have. And for the most part, religions mainly focus not so much on life, but on death. Even the parts that touch upon life are only guidelines on how to have the ideal afterlife. So here's my newest theory. No matter what religion you choose, the afterlife is going to be the same for everyone. Whether your christian, or wiccan, or a satanist, or muslim, we are all going to end up in the same afterlife, and in all honesty, its a mystery. Don't waste your life looking for the perfect religion, and if you have a religion you believe in, don't waste your time trying to convert people, they don't want to hear it, and we're all going to end up in the same place anyways. You should try and build a belief system that helps you live a happy and fullfilled life with no aspects that you dislike. Because in the end, life is something you can control for certain, death may already be a set path...

something to think about
July 23, 2005, 1:23AM

by: myinsanity

For those of you who are tired of boring preachy religion and are searching for something to believe in, i have concocted a theory that may, at the least, amuse you. You are the center of your universe, and everything revolves around you. You are god. Although you are merely a product of your environment, every aspect of life is governed and controlled by your actions. You control life. No only of yours, but of all those lives around, and of the lives that are not around you. Directly and indirectly you happen to alter and manipulate reality to how you see fit. As soon as your entity existed, your mere will created the universe, and all its contents, everyone and everything before you was created for your amusement. All of history was written from your mind, to create a world for you to delve in. Now sit tight, it may get confusing now. You are the product of your environment, that you created. So from the first seconds of life on this earth, you have began to shape your future. Every action that you make not only changes your environment, but changes your future. Your life is completely in your hands, and can be shaped from shere will power. You have the power to cure any disease, any illness, any misforture. You could prevent death, if only you know what exact chain of events caused it. In that same though, you are life. You are all of existance. And existance lies within you. If you were to die, then everything would die with you. Life woul cease to exist. There would be nothing. Every life is your own, and hence why it is changeable, and in your control. Whether you choose to embrace your power, and bask in splendor, becoming what you want to be, making things happen, and litteraly becoming the universe that you are. Or choose to sit and watch the world you manipulate and change, unfold before your eyes, and merely admire the work you have created, is up to you. But realize that you are everything. If you want the universe to end, it only takes one bullet...

Think about that.

Warning: Fake Emails
July 18, 2005, 2:28PM

by: eon

This is a general advisory to all Andromeda members who are using a DarkStarlings Email account. Some people have received messages from "The Darkstarlings Support Team" accusing them of sending out spam and then threatening them to open an attachment or face having their account deleted. The attachment is a virus. Here is a copy of one of the emails:

Dear Darkstarlings Member,
Your e-mail account was used to send a huge amount of unsolicited spam messages during the recent week. If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and confirm the attached document so you will not run into any future problems with the online service.
If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to cancel your membership.
Virtually yours,
The Darkstarlings Support Team

+++ Attachment: No Virus found
+++ Darkstarlings Antivirus - www.darkstarlings.com

These emails are bogus. Do NOT open any attachments sent to you by "The Darkstarlings Support Team".

There is no such "Support Team" and again, the attachments are viruses.

That is all...

What is Goth ????
July 12, 2005, 2:02AM

by: Zer0

Goth in its simplest form, is a subculture. A group of people who feel comfortable within each others company. There is no specific thing that defines what you need to do or be to fit into the goth scene (except of course the implied black clothing). People in the goth scene all have different musical tastes, follow different religions, have different occupations, hobbies, and fashion sense.

Why do people become goths?
Most goths become goths because they have been spurned by 'normal' society because the way they want to live their lives does not fit in with how most people are told to live theirs. Goths are free thinkers, people who do not accept the moral rules of society because they're told 'This is just how it is' or 'This is what God says!'. Rather goths tend to listen to what you have to say, and make up their own mind. This kind of free thinking and rejection of dogma earns only rejection in todays society.

However because of this rejection from 'normal' society, goths have banded together to associate with other free thinkers. This has a beneficial effect on both the individual and society as a whole. For the individual they have a sense of belonging, and friends they can associate with. For society it removes one more misfit filled with rage from society's streets.

This of course is not the case for all goths. Many goths today are goths for a variety of other reasons. They like the music, or the clubs are better, they have goth friends and joined in with them, or they just like staying up late nights and goths are the only ones awake to talk to.

The gothic stereotype
Many stereotypes of goths exist these days. It seems everyone has their own way to define 'what is goth'. From the stereotypes based on clothing to music right up to the stereotypes of all goths being satanists or part of some kind of cult. Categorically, all of these are false.

The goth scene is just as widely varied as society in general. There are many different professions represented in the scene, from highly skilled professionals like doctors and lawyers, to tradesman, to technically minded people to clerical workers. Many different musical tastes exist (and not all of them goth, there is a HUGE 80's following in the goth scene for some reason). The fashion varies vastly from goth to goth from the traditional flowing victorian style garments to the buckled and studded style regalia (also called industrial style, which is often closely related with goths, and have come to an understanding of co-existance, if uneasily at times).

How do I get into goth?
This is the simplest part of the page. Go check out our Community section over on the left, and use it to find out whats going on in your local area. Goths tend to be accepting and open minded. Just turn up to a club or event wearing all black and your already in the goth scene. You'll pick it up as you go along (just a hint though, lay off the vampire comments!).

The gothic sense of humour is highly developed, and often leans toward the satirical. Quietly laughing at the more idiotic and less tolerant factions of society that seem to think yelling out of cars at us makes them cooler. Goths have learned to laugh at themselves and see society in a much different light. They have had to, and it is a trait most would not give up.

Goths have for the most part (not unanimously of course, but mostly) dropped all forms of prejudice. Noone is afraid within the goth scene to come out as being gay, and noone has to hide their religion for fear of scorn from their peers or zealots wanting to convert them from the arms of Satan. In fact because of these facts (and the general lack of prejudice) the goth scene has a large proportion of gays/bisexuals, and followers of non-mainstream religions and views. This of course is the most important aspect of gothdom, and why most goths became goths in the first place, tolerance.

But they think weird!
Ah, but this is the beauty of goths. Most subjects that are taboo in 'normal' society are freely discussed and debated about. Death, religion, magick, mysticism, and many other topics that are only roached carefully outside of the gothic community. Most goths have realised that fear is only a reaction instilled in us by dogmatic propaganda, and once you realise there is nothing to fear from the topic, whats to stop you discussing it?

Goths often revel in the fear given to them by society as a whole. Often the behavior exhibited by society to them based on society's perception of them from stereotypes, rumour, etc are a constant source of entertainment. Of course, most of the rumours are totally unfounded, goths are people like everyone else, however when you already have a reputation, going for the shock factor is often far too tempting to see how much society at large is willing to believe (or deduce) with only a little encouragement.

This does not totally fall away once you get inside the scene unfortunately, and goths are all too often tempted to try for the shock factor within the scene (which turns out more tacky than shocking). Goths when you get down to it can be a rather pretentious bunch, trying for those extra 'goth points' on the gothier than thou scale, but it adds to the enjoyment.

Petite Article
July 6, 2005, 12:22PM

by: Toxic Rein

I’m going to make this clear.

By every second the world gets worse,

you know the end is near,

at one point everything is going to go insane, and something’s is going to trigger it and make some event happen.

and event that will change this earth, a good change you hope?

probably not... oh well...

so many theories how earth will die, will the ozone layer come to its senses and just be sick of all the crap on earth and fly off...

Can we change this?

will some big asteroids come and crash into our earth.

Can we change this?

perhaps creatures from distant galaxies shall come and put us in enslavement , that is if there is any out there.

Can we change this?

maybe the sun will just want to disintegrate us, dry up out oceans, fry out lands, make walls of inferno, gashes of flames all over.

Can we change this?

or better yet, the living organisms on this planet, mainly us humans, will just be so pissed at each other, we shall launch all those shiny nuclear missiles and boom, bye bye earth.

Can we change this?

Yes, we can there is still hope, a lot of us can make a difference, we cant change natural disasters yet, but we have logic, we can reason with our problems, the war goes on and on… this is no perfect earth, but we can speak, if your mind wonders for hours about things like this, speak, say something, don’t hide from it, takes risks if you have to, we cant get everything out of logic though, others have to fight for it.

Well thank you for reading my amateur article… that is if this does get in ?

Not A Game
June 28, 2005, 2:48PM

by: AveForARose

Hey there dolls! I am sitting here and wondering, what the hell is wrong with the human race?!? Seriously... Most of them are despicable, vile, horrid little creatures who can't tell the truth even if willed to do so by the Almighty himself! I find it more than a little grating that no one seems to hold any sort of regard for honesty anymore. Liars are lower than low. Oh, and another group of undesirables who should be stabbed repeatedly in the neck with a No. 2 pencil... People who find it necessary to hurt kind, innocent, good hearted people for no other reason than the sick joy they derive from it.. Occasionally, a real winner comes along and dances freely about both of these categories. It is they who I really dislike. There is no worse feeling than watching a friend's heart break in two and knowing that the only one who can fix it is the one who broke it in the first place. So what does one do when thrust into this situation? Do you sit back and watch as they suffer? Do you try to offer as much help as possible? Or do you go and knock the ever-loving fuck out of the asshole who created the whole mess? I will tell you immediately that the last is not truly an option... Merely a nice little scenario in the mind to help ease the anger swelling in your heart. So, to all of you who have been in this situation and screwed it up, and for those of you who have yet to be in this situation... Take notes. What you should do is this... Be a friend. Tell the truth, but try to keep personal opinions out of it. Just try to remember that what they do is their decision and you have no real right to try and influence it. Just comfort them when they are sad, let them vent when they are angry, listen when they want to talk, and most of all, never tell them how they should or should not feel or what to do. They don't need that, they just need to get what they think and feel straight. I know the first instinct is to do the exact opposite and try to jump in and make things go the way you think they should... But honestly, you aren't part of it. It is hard, don't get me wrong... But you want to let them make their own decisions. This way, in the end, they know they followed their heart and not yours. But, onto other things. A warning: To all of you out there who think that messing with my friends or anyone deemed undeserving of your twisted mind-games in any way is a game... Be careful. They may not be the kind that will hunt you down and beat you, but I am. I will make sure that you rue the day you ever considered hurting them. Love and friendship are not a game, they are not weapons and they sure as hell aren't a joke. I am tired of people walking all over those who have done nothing wrong, so know this. My friends are good people as are your other victims. Kind, generous, helpful and loving. They give so much and expect so little. Maybe this is why you scum-sucking bottom feeders feel the need to use them or play games with their emotions, but it is over. They have been nothing but decent and a damn good friend to everyone, and it is disgusting how any of you can hurt someone like that. So take heed... I am watching, and if I don't like what I see, there will be hell to pay.
