I know, kind of lame, but if you're jonesing for an SC II fix and need to restock on Andromeda, maybe this sounds good.
I can't guarantee you'll get it--first come, first serve. Just purchase a year and leave me a comment. First comment I get will receive the SC II trial.
I'll post the winner here.

| Updated IM Features |
August 27, 2010, 1:56AM |
 by: eon |
|
Two important features have been added to the IM system:
The ability to block other members from IM-ing you, and the ability to remove the IM bar completely from your screen.
Blocking a user from your IM is easy. Just block them the way you normally would by visiting their profile and clicking their 'Add [name] to your block list' link.
If you've already blocked someone and are still getting their IMs, you will need to un-block and then re-block them.
To remove the IM bar entirely, go into your control panel and find the link for IM Settings. Change 'IM' to 'Disable' and you're all set. |

| New IM System |
August 23, 2010, 12:18AM |
 by: eon |
|
You may have noticed the new Facebook-esque IM bar at the bottom of your pages. It does exactly what you'd think. If you click the "Who's Online" tab, you'll get a list of all of your friends who are online. Clicking on any of them will open up an IM conversation with them.
Currently, the "friend" system on this site is a little bit loose. That is, someone can add you to their friends list without permission, so "friendships" aren't necessarily mutual relationships. The effect this will have on the IM system is that people who have added you will be able to see your online status whether or not you've added them back.
I'm going to see how that aspect of it goes for a bit. If it doesn't work out, we're looking at a major overhaul of the friend system on this site, where all friend requests would have to be approved. Before we jump to that, let's give this a shot. Remember that you can always remove yourself from anyone's friends list by clicking the link from your profile which shows those who have friended you. And of course, if you have trouble with someone re-adding you, you can always block them.
For Andromeda members, this opens up an interesting new possibility. Andromeda invisibility operates separately from invisibility on the IM system. Therefore, it is possible for Andromeda members to be invisible to the site at large, but still visible and available to their friends for chat. Pretty neat.
(All members have the ability to go invisible on the IM system by clicking the little 'gear' icon to the far right of the tool bar and then clicking 'Invisible'. You should do this if you don't want to receive any IMs!)
This system has replaced the previous IM system by UserPlane. Frankly, good riddance!
So, guys, play around with this. Please comment me if you find any bugs, suspicious activity, or large piles of unattended cash.
And, as always,
Enjoy . . . |

| Andromeda Feature Update |
August 12, 2010, 12:12AM |
 by: eon |
|
The Andromeda list of recent profile visitors will now include the number of times each individual has visited the profile, thereby increasing the creepy, stalker-ish powers of Andromeda account holders.
The number of visits will only increase for any individual once per ten minutes. This way if someone visits your profile and clicks around for a bit, they won't run up a huge number of artificial "visits". (Either accidentally or on purpose!) This will make the count a more accurate reflection of unique visits.
Want to know more about Andromeda membership?
Enjoy...

| Of Scientists and Philosophers |
July 31, 2010, 12:59PM |
 by: Desecration |
|
Firstly, let it be said that I am often criticized by others for my predominantly empirically-minded attitude towards the world around me, and as such, my admiration for and appreciation of the empirical sciences is great.
Whilst my admiration however, for both the profession and the professors of each is vast, only the latter of the two is appropriated my reverence. For while I can claim not to be a scientist, as such a severe insult that would be to science itself, I can liken its professors (perhaps, however, giving concession to those of the theoretical, and thus very much philosophical, realm) to the common builder, mechanic, or craftsmen. This again, is intended as no insult, but rather as an allegory.
Science as it is now, although once being derived of philosophy, has limits which are comparatively infinitesimal. The professor of science may know the inner-most intricacies of the empirical world, the most minute detail of the corporeal building blocks of the universe we find ourselves in, but what he may fail to grasp, is the profundity which lies therein.
The philosopher’s job is of much greater scope, not only in and of itself, but also in the prerequisite scientific competency, which is necessarily incorporated into his work, should it be taken at all seriously. So, whereas the scientist is the mechanic or builder, with only a practical understanding (once again I must remind the reader of the aforementioned concession), the philosopher is the architect, with both a practical competency (I must stress the use of the word competency, so as not to undermine the much more rigorous understanding of scientists), and a metaphysical, theoretical wisdom, which allows him to gaze beyond the “muddy vesture of decay”, and catch a glimpse of the sublime that lies beyond. |

| AVChat replacing TinyChat. |
July 30, 2010, 1:24PM |
 by: eon |
|
I've replaced the previous chat (a TinyChat room) with our own in-house chat server (AVChat). There are some tradeoffs here, but overall, I'm liking AVChat much better and most seem to agree. We have it on a 30 day demo before I must make a purchase decision, so try it out and let me know what you think.
When playing with it, realize that all of the cam and chat windows can be moved around and re-sized any way you like. (To re-size, use the red tab on the corner of any window.) So if it looks a little messy when you first enter, don't let that deter you. A bit of playing around and you can have a nice display!
On the plus side, the new server doesn't have the same annoying character limit as TinyChat. I don't know about you guys, but it was intensely frustrating when I needed to type a message longer than like 64 characters. (Which happened frequently.) Also, there will be no random fuck-tards invading the room from the great internet abyss. Only registered DS users are allowed to enter the chat, so there will be no reason to have a password or anything like that. In addition, the chat is more tightly integrated with the site. Users are displayed with their DS icon and link back to DS profiles. There are also a few other nice features in AVChat that were not present in TinyChat. (Like inline display of images and YouTube videos!)
The only real negative I see is that it's hosted on our own bandwidth, so I've had to impose some sensible limitations. Namely, you'll only be able to view a maximum of 4 cameras at a time. Of course, you can close / open any cams you like, allowing you to watch the 4 people of your choice. I don't see this as a huge drawback, as opening more than 4 windows tends to hog up screen space anyway and really, do we need to watch 8 people simultaneously? ;)
Having said that, I may eventually allow additional cam views to Andromeda members. I need to watch the bandwidth utilization for a while first, though.
Hope you guys enjoy it. |

| Chat Room Password |
July 17, 2010, 4:37PM |
 by: eon |
|
Because of trouble from no-good-so-and-sos, the chat room is now password protected.
Password: dschat
This will hopefully keep random people from the tinychat site from jumping in and causing so much trouble.
For now, this will cause the main chat entrance page to always report that there are zero people in chat. Just ignore it and go ahead and enter the room to find out for sure.
I'll be back in a few days to evaluate everything further and fix the splash page if possibe.
Later! |

Okay so I've been going on about this film to a few people I know in real life, on-and-off, for a little while now. And on my lunch break today I stumbled across it for £10...
The Fourth Kind (2009) ... The blurb is as follows:
In remote Alaska, citizens have been mysteriously vanishing since the 1960s. Despite multiple investigations, the truth behind the phenomena had never been discovered - until now.
While video taping therapy sessions with traumatised patients, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) unwittingly exposes terrifying revelations of multiple victims whose claims of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details.
Based on actual case studies, The Fourth Kind uses Dr. Tyler's never-before-seen archival footage alongside dramatic reenactments to present the most disturbing evidence ever documented in this provocative thriller critics are calling "terrifyingly real... The most shocking alien abduction movie to date."
~
I'd seen this before, so I knew what the film was like and what to expect. But then I'd watched that with two other people, and one was far more scared than me so it helped me get around being freaked out by it.
But then I bought it earlier and made the plan to watch it on my own in my flat.
Which I duly did.
So I watched this in my small flat, filled with blind spots, corners, and all sorts of things that exacerbate nightmarish thoughts (not to mention that it's down the end of a dark alley, and completely devoid of people except for me... even the upstairs flat is vacant).
I always watch movies in my chair, with my beanbag, with the main light off and a small lamp on behind me. It cuts out visual interference, and makes it a lot easier to get involved in a film.
I wish I hadn't now!
This film is about traumatised patients who suffer from sleeping problems and wake up at strange times of the night. They report seeing a white owl that is constantly looking at them whatever they do.
I wouldn't say I'm traumatised, but I suffer from sleeping problems and often wake up at strange times of the night. And I know what I'm like...
I have a strong imagination, and if I wake up at stupid o'clock tonight I'm going to instantly tell myself not to imagine an owl, and then I will and will start panicking for no reason!
I mean jeez... when the film ended and it went back to the menu screen I quickly turned the TV off, but have not been able to bring myself to turn the PS2 off! (That's what I played it on...)
It's still on now! As are all the lights...
I'm sat here generally apprehensive about nothing specific, wondering if I'm going to try and keep myself up all night... despite being exhausted at only 10 to 1 in the morning!
Ohh I'm not looking forward to the rest of the night now...
---
If you have seen this movie, please don't ruin it for those who haven't.
Discussions on this article would be a lot more productive as discussing Alien Abduction theories or anything of the sort, as opposed to the specific subject matter I've approached... despite it being damn good. |

| Winds of Time - 4TH of July |

Sitting A mist the lit sky a bright red, white and blue,
Holding and embracing the glow of her all natural features,
Thinking what it is like to be an American in the land of the free,
To be independent in a world of uncertain futures.
Here we are Standing Tall amongst the shadows of the forgot empire,
Where those bright colors simply fade into the background of the night sky,
Bombs Bursting and Rocket blazing in this night sky with the booms and crashes you all grew to love,
Soldiers and Patriots Recalling times of Real Bombs bursting and people crying in the deep woods and cities.
Forgot in the winds of time to a generation of the uncaring society of "reason" |
